Jamie, a 28-year-old artist and adaptive art specialist who uses a wheelchair, arrived at camp with her sketchbook, artist bag, and a mission: to prove that creativity belongs to everyone. Known for her problem-solving spirit and her catchphrase, “Creativity knows no bounds,” Jamie quickly transformed the Arts and Crafts Building into a place where barriers became design opportunities, and every camper could create art in their own way.

Sunday Arrival: Bringing Artistic Expertise to Camp

Twenty-eight-year-old Jamie rolled into Beacon Lodge Camp with their wheelchair loaded with an artist bag, professional sketchbook, and pencil case full of specialized tools. As an established adaptive art specialist and inclusive design advocate, Jamie had come to Camp Empower not as a student, but as a teacher ready to share years of innovation in accessible creativity.

“I’d heard about Camp Empower‘s arts program and knew they had pottery kilns in the adult camp area,” Jamie explains, surveying the Arts and Crafts Building that would become their headquarters. “I saw an opportunity to introduce adaptive techniques and custom tools that could open up new possibilities for everyone.”

Jamie’s expertise was immediately apparent to staff and fellow campers. Within hours of arrival, they had assessed the arts building’s accessibility, identified opportunities for adaptive modifications, and begun sketching designs for custom tools that could help campers with various disabilities engage more fully in creative activities.

“Jamie came in like a creative tornado,” recalls Arts Director Lisa. “They didn’t just want to participate in our existing programs – they wanted to revolutionize how we thought about accessible art-making.”

Days 1-2: Transforming the Creative Space

Jamie’s leadership emerged immediately as they began conducting informal assessments of how different campers interacted with art materials and spaces. Using their background in inclusive design, Jamie identified barriers and began developing solutions in real-time.

“I watched how people navigated the space, reached for materials, held tools,” Jamie explains. “Every challenge I saw was actually a design opportunity waiting to happen.”

Jamie’s first innovation was a series of adaptive tool modifications using materials from their artist bag and items found around camp. Extended brush handles for campers with limited reach, weighted grip aids for better control, and adjustable easel systems that worked from various positions and heights.

“Jamie’s approach wasn’t to lower expectations or simplify projects,” observes Mark, the counselor. “It was to innovate tools and techniques so everyone could tackle ambitious creative work in their own way.”

The pottery kilns became Jamie’s particular passion. Working with campers who had never considered ceramics accessible, Jamie developed adaptive wheel techniques, custom pottery tools, and modified glazing methods that opened up this art form to people with various physical limitations.

Days 3-4: Leading Creative Workshops
