The People Behind the Experience
The single largest cost at Beacon Lodge is staff, and that is exactly how it should be.
Every session is staffed according to the specific needs of the campers attending. A program serving campers with higher support needs runs more counselors per camper than a program serving more independent adults. Every counselor receives training specific to the disability population they will serve. Every session has on-site nursing coverage, around the clock.
This is not a generic summer camp model. It is a specialized care environment that is also joyful, adventurous, and full of laughter.
Counselor Staffing
Each counselor costs $1,620 per week — covering their stipend, meals, and lodging. Ratios range from 1 counselor for every 3 campers to 1 for every 8, depending on the program. These ratios are set by the needs of the disability population served, not by budget preference.
Nursing and Health Coverage
A trained nursing team is on site and on call 24 hours a day for every session. Campers with complex medical needs, medication management, or health monitoring depend on this coverage to participate safely. It is not optional — and it is not cheap.
The Place That Makes It Possible
PA Lions Beacon Lodge Camp sits on 583 acres in Pennsylvania’s Appalachian Mountains. Maintaining that space – the cabins, the dining facilities, the accessible trails, the pool, the climbing tower, the zipline – is an ongoing operational cost that runs year-round, not just during camp season.

Three meals a day, plus snacks, for every camper and every staff member. Most cabin facilities are air-conditioned and include private bathrooms — because comfort and dignity are part of the experience, not luxuries.
